TYT MD-2017 Dual Band DMR and MFJ-849 Digital SWR Watt Meter Reviews K6UDA Radio Episode 55

Curiosity got the best of me. I finally ordered a DMR handheld radio and picked the new TYT MD-2017 UHF/VHF DMR Analog unit. I've never used a DMR radio before and wanted to see if an average guy could program it and get on the air.How does DMR compare to D-Dstar? I also got a new digital SWR /Power meter from MFJ just in time for Field Day. This is the MFJ-849 Digital SWR/Watt Meter. What do I think of it?

PL-259 connector installation on a RG-213 (or RG-8) coaxial cable

In this video, I'm showing how I installed my PL-259 connector on a RG-213 (or RG-8) coaxial cable. I'm not the only one using this technic but after 25 years of hamming this is the best one.

Please note that if you make a connector while the other end is connected to a DC Ground antenna, the PL-259 will be short when tested, that's normal. If it's short be sure the antenna is DC ground, otherwise it's faulty.

Icom 7300 Panadapter Using Inrad RX7300, DXPatrol And HDSDR

I have seen a few ideas for getting an external panadapter going on the Icom 7300. Since there isn't an IF tap inside the rig Hams have found an RF tap.

The solution I used is probably more expensive, but it's not too invasive and easy to reverse if needed. I have an Inrad RX7300 ($40), Mini Circuits ZFSC-2-1 splitter/combiner ($25), DXPatrol SDR ($108) and some cables ($21). The less expensive RTL-SDR may work for some, but I have local AM broadcast that…

FCC to require "Felony" Question on NCVEC 605

I was just informed of the update below. Obviously there are many questions that need to be answered and I suspect that some of them will be addressed at the meeting of the VECs in Gettysburg in 21 July.

There is no immediate action required by you at this time but I feel it’s necessary to give you this “heads up”.

This is what the FCC sent to the VECs earlier today

We are providing notification that the form 605 will be changing on approximately August 3, 2017. The Commission…
